' The Stockton and Darlington Railway line Stockton passed along this quayside to its terminus at Silver Street. Immediately after the official opening on 27 September 1825, locomotives were only used on freight trains; passenger services were provided by horse-drawn vehicles resembling stagecoaches with flanged wheels. There were no formal stations and passengers boarded and left the trains at convenient points along the line, often close to licensed premises. Passenger services along the quayside ceased in 1842 when a new passenger station was opened just off Bridge Road, adjacent to St Johns Well. Freight traffic lasted until 1967 when the line was closed completely and a town centre bypass road built along much of the trackbed. '
