' As a young girl in the late 1920s early 1930s my mother (born 1922) lived here at 2 Cuthbert St. It was upstairs and above the Relief Office which was similar to the Dole. Once a week the out of work men would form a long queue in the back yard and out into the lane. As the entrance to the upstairs was by an outside wooden staircase, my Gran never went out those days. She was a very shy lady and didn't like having to wind her way past all those men. '
