' 15 inch naval gun nicknamed Jane. The emplacement was built and the gun installed between February and May 1942. It had a range of about 21 miles / 33.7km, but by use of super charge propellant, this could be increased to just under 24 miles / 38.4km. Only armour piercing shells were used, these weighted 1,938lbs / 879kg. Under the command of 540 Coastal Defence Regiment R.A., this gun and its sister, Clem, were Britain's largest coastal defence guns and were used for attacking enemy shipping in the Straits of Dover, and for counter battery attacks on the long range German guns in the Pas de Calais. On the 26th September 1944, the final duel with the German gunners resulted in a direct hit by Jane on the 16inch Batterie Grosser Kurfurst at Floringzelle which completely disabled one of those guns. Jane and Clem were finally taken out of service and removed in 1959.
