' Gallowgate Central Station, No 11 Lambert Street, Glasgow This station was built for the North British Railway as part of its Bridgeton branch, and opened in 1892. It was similar to other North British Railway stations in Glasgow in having a booking office at street level, with stairs leading down to platforms in cutting. This shows the surface block from the north-west, its bold architectural treatment making it look more like a bank than a railway station. It closed in 1917, as a result of competition from tramway services. This building was occupied in 1966 by J R Dalziel (Casings) Ltd, butchers' outfitters. The North British Railway built its short Bridgeton branch from High Street partly to counter impending Caledonian Railway competition, and also to provide a terminus for suburban trains from the west. It was closed to passengers when the north side suburban services were electrified in 1960. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN. '
