' This was the site of Fort Twiss, one of three artillery forts built in 1798 at the beginning of the Napoleonic War. These were later supplemented by the line of Martello Towers. Fort Twiss was disposed of and demolished, along with the other two nearby forts (Fort Sutherland and Fort Moncrief), in the 1860s. '
