This was the site of Fort Sutherland, one of three artillery forts built in 1798 at the beginning of the Napoleonic War. These were later supplemented by the line of Martello Towers.
Fort Sutherland was demolished, along with the other two nearby forts (Fort Twiss and Fort Moncrief), in the 1860s. '
