Originally built as a windmill for grinding snuff in 1776. A strong gale in 1778 drove the sails round so fast that wooden pivots caught fire and the mill was ruined. It was rebuilt as an observatory in 1828

A magnificent view of Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge (1864), looking ENE from the Somerset side. In the right foreground is "Burwalls", which later became a university hall of residence for men. The bridge led to the development of a high class suburb at Leigh Woods, including the distinctive "Alpenfels" on North Road. On the far side of the Avon Gorge is the superior suburb of Clifton, which was built from the 1780s.
