I have an abiding memory of this area from a Sunday morning in about 1972. I was passionate about the steam locomotives which operated the NCB colliery railway system based at Mountain Ash. On this day I went out to Farm Road where I watched a tank engine and about six fully laden coal wagons working flat out up the Aman valley with the sound of the exhaust richocheting off the valley sides as it disappeared slowly into the distance.

This photo was catalogued as "View of unidentified industrial site near Newport". The correct location is about 23 miles away at Godreaman near Aberaman and Abercwmboi in the Cynon Valley.

This is Godreaman looking east towards Abercwmboi in the Cynon Valley.

Much has changed since the photo was taken but there is also much still there to enable identification.

I was able to get the initial germ of the idea of where this was from the bend in Cardiff Road. The 90degree bend is fairly uncommon so I was able to look it up on Google and then I was able to check that it was this location.

The school yard is present but the main school building appears to have gone.

The terraces in Abercwmboi are the same now as in 1930.

This is a confirmed identification.

Thank you Brian Wilkinson for putting your comment in yesterday which encouraged me to have another go.

I grew up in Newport, and can state categorically that this is not Stow Hill! The (?colliery) trucks and slag heap suggest to me it might be somewhere in the Valleys.

I think that this one needs another look. I am not convinced by the suggested location of Stow Hill, Newport.

Where ever it is we need some evidence so that we can confirm the location. Personally I have had no luck at all on this one and it remains a mystery to me.

Can anyone help us out.
