This must be a nice section of the modern Wye Valley cycle way and foot path.

Timber loaded over the end of the wagon. The other wagons in the train seem to have shorter, flat loads of timber; no doubt a product from the local forests at the northern edge of the Forest of Dean.

There does not appear to be a brake van on the end of the train, so I suspect we are witnessing a shunting operation, possible exchanging wagons between the two routes/railways at Lydbrook Junction.

The southern end of Lydbrook Junction Station - Great Western Railway. Closed to passengers 1959 and goods 1964. The junction was with the Severn and Wye Joint Railway, a joint Great Western and Midland railway line. This line ran to the east and then south through Lydbrook behind the Tumps Hill ridge.

This straight line in the landscape is in the location of the Lydbrook viaduct... it is at the right angle from the straight section of railway in the foreground of the picture. Guess work.

Great photos aren't they once you get your head into map mode. Yes the section of line from Symonds Yat to Lydbrook junction. My dad worked on this line from 1936 to 1958, and I remember waving too him from the train as we passed him burning scrub with his gang just before the bridge into the tunnel. I walk there now and think he was so lucky to work in such a beautiful place.

Location confirmed.

View looking roughly north east to the east of Symonds Yat. To the east (right) of the River Wye is English Bicknor and to the west Welsh Bicknor.

An interesting photograph of a GWR pick up goods train with a variety of traffic.

This is effectively an unlocated shot as the pin has been placed in the town centre of Monmouth. The photo is not of Monmouth town centre. The river is likely to be the River Wye but I can not give a specific location at this time.
