Terminus of the Ripon Canal, just over 2 miles long from the River Ure. Went out of use in the mid-1950s, but has been restored.

The former Leeds Northern railway, opened 1852, which became part of the North-Eastern Railway, thence to the LNER and BR. The latter closed the line in early 1967, although it was reopened for a few days later in 1967 when a serious accident closed the East Coast main line.
