Hercules Cycle & Motor Co Ltd, Britannia Works, Rocky Lane - started in 1911, in a back garden in Conybere Street but had moved to what had been part of the Dunlop Rubber Works, off Catherine Street, by 1914. By 1924 Hercules had bought the remainder of the Dunlop site and had its main entrance off Rocky Lane. In 1939 it claimed to be the worlds largest manufacturer of cycles having made 6,000,000. Soon after WW2 it was sold to its main supplier, Tube Investments Ltd. |
