The Princess Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children was founded in 1934 to care for sick children from London. The hospital was built around Banstead Wood House, an existing house by Norman Shaw. The house was half destroyed by fire in 1936 as can be seen here. The house was rebuilt and new hospital buildings were added to the design of H.S. Goodhart-Rendel. Additional buildings were planned, but construction was halted by the outbreak of war.



During the Second World War, the part-completed campus became an emergency hospital. The hospital finally opened in 1948 as the country branch of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for Children in London.



In 1973 it became a satellite of the Manor Hospital in Epsom and was used as a hospital for mentally handicapped patients. It closed in 1998 and has now been converted to luxury apartments.
