On the ground floor of this block was numbers 2 & 4 Cuthbert St which was the Relief Office. This was where the unemployed would get a bit help with money to feed their families. My grandparents lived above the office.

On my map this is the 'Fire Engine House' belonging to the Chemical Works.

When I was a child in the late 40s & through the 50s this land had returned to nature with rough grassy areas & weeds & was known locally as 'Tennants Field'

The remains of the old Chemical Works started in the 1860s by Charles Tennant & Co of Glasgow.It later became the United Alkali Co.
