Site of the 1930s Asbestos Works on Tolpits Lane, which was served by a siding on the south side of the LMS Rickmansworth Branch railway until about 1967. The works became Cape Universal Claddings until closure in 1985.

Sandy Lodge Golf Course, founded in 1910, just a couple of years before its neighbour on the east side of Sandy Lane, Oxhey Golf Club (1912-1946). The area shown on the image as part of Oxhey Golf Course became South Oxhey Playing Fields in 1952, following the construction of the vast, sprawling housing estate, which accommodated 17,000 inhabitants, mostly from Inner London.

"Braeside" (219), Hampermill Lane, constructed in 1929, just prior to this photograph, was the home of Sid Baker and family, Head Greenkeeper at Oxhey Golf Club until his retirement in 1951. He had been involved in the construction of the famous old course from its inception in 1912. He returned to work as an employee at the club after serving in the Great War, firstly as a groundsman and then foreman, before his promotion to Head Greenkeeper. I remain friends with two of his grandchildren, Don and Dave Dunham, whom I first met in 1957, when they also lived at No.219.

Well spotted, This is six! I lived in the former Police House at No.314, from February 1953 until January 1965. It has been considerably extended since 1992 to form one of the largest properties on South Oxhey Estate.

This was built and opened in the autumn of 1957. It continues to trade to this day. I remember looking at the clear exposure of Upper Chalk beneath the thin covering of Reading Beds as a 13-year-old schoolboy!

Contemporary maps indicate the existence of the first of the lakes at Hampermill by 1938. One employee at Merchant Taylors' School informed this contributor last year that a second lake was created by 1961, between the school and Tolpits Lane.

An interesting view, looking towards the north-west from the western edge of Oxhey Golf Course and Hampermill Spring, across an area that was to undergo development in the following decade, with factories set up on Tolpits Lane, between the LMS Railway Branch and the River Colne, in addition to Merchant Taylors' School.
