South bound traffic is using a temporary bridge while the north bound traffic is on the 'wrong' side of the old bridge. Is this the beginning of the rebuilding programme?

Maurice
Wednesday 12th of June 2013 06:37:01 AM
In the 1920s Waterloo Bridge require temporary reinforcement due to the settlement of pier five. In the picture pier five is surround by a structure that could be a coffer dam to keep the base of the pier dry.

The old bridge seen here, designed by John Rennie, was opened in 1817. The structural problems and insufficient capacity brought about the construction of a new bridge, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, opened in stages between 1942 and 45. Due to wartime labour shortages much of the work on the new bridge was carried out by female labour. The new bridge has the most graceful and cleanest lines of any of the London bridges.

The tram would have only travelled a very short distance northwards because the terminus was situated at the Fire Station, now a PH of that name.

Spur Road. One of several taxi cab approaches to the station. This one swings round over the Waterloo and City. A row of cabs can be seen waiting alongside the main station building waiting to move round to the pick up point above the Waterloo Road.

"Snow Hill" Tunnel portal (and station). "City Thameslink" station occupies this site today. To the south, Thameslink services continued overground over the original route for a few years until it was decided to bury the entire line below ground almost all the way to Blackfriars.
