 Lollards' Tower or Prison. In the 15th century, used to hold heretics prior to being burnt at the stake. The Lollards were dissenters who followed John Wycliffe. | St Mary Major the parish church of one of Exeter's oldest parishes was demolished in the 1970's. Unfortunately another example of Exeter City Council's philistine attitude towards its history. |

For information, this church was built in 1867 as a replacement for the original Minster church, which was in a poor state of repair. It was not considered to be of much architectural merit, and due to declining use in the mid-20th century, the decision was made by the church authorities (not the council) to close and demolish the church, which was done in 1971. I'm not one for demolishing buildings, but its loss has created a clear view of the West end of the cathedral and a larger open space in the city centre. | Exeter Cathedral, the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter at Exeter, is an Anglican cathedral, and the seat of the Bishop of Exeter.
The present building was complete by about 1400, and has several notable features, including an early set of misericords, an astronomical clock and the longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling in England.

For as long as I can remember there has been appeals for funds to maintain the elaborate structural fabric, carvings and roof. At present there is an appeal for funds to maintain and repair the roof. I have often wondered how much has been spent on the maintenance of this iconic building over the years. |
