It must have been later there was a row of shops here, amongst them a fish and chip shop where mother went to get three happorth of crackling (loose batter from the bottom of the fryer)!

I think you are correct; I used to walk past them myself on the way home from school. There was a pub around the corner, at the junction with Stoke road, called the Bricklayers Arms(?).
