My Gradad served his apprenticeship there, I am just old enough to remember the sound of the hooter and thousands of hobnailed boots marching along cobbled streets as the shifts changed. Even in the 60s the sounds of the industry on the river could be clearly heard several miles away on a clear day and on New Year's eve the factories and ships would all hoot at midnight.
