The Gear Making Company at the bottom of Prince Consort Rd. In the 20s it was the Reay Gear Works then later it was Geo Angus Gears, & later until the mid 70s it became RW Transmissions.

This was known as 'Bottom Reyrolles. The Company was basically split by the Newcastle to South Shields railway line so one part was the Newtown Works & the other the Bottom Works

Reyrolles who started in Hebburn about 1902 & at its peak employed over 11,000 people. My late father Bill was born in 1922 & served his apprenticeship with them & worked there for 48 yrs as a 'Horizontal Borer'.

The Tharsis Reservoir just left unfenced & deadly being so deep with it's steeply sloping sides. I have heard of three young people drowning in this reservoir. Two children early 1900s & one boy about 7 yrs old in 1950-51.

Tharsis Sulpher & Copper Works that started in Hebburn about 1865. When this photo was taken Tharsis had pulled out of the town leaving this derelict land.
