A Lockheed Constellation airliner of BOAC who maintained their large aircraft at Filton for several years. Two more can be seen inside the hangar. Note the oil stains on the apron where the engines would be run up.

Entrance to "No.7 DO", the Drawing Office where the Britannia and much of Concorde would be designed. The Aerodynamics, Stress and other technical offices were in here.

"The American Site". These are the concrete aprons and bases of the temporary hangars where hundreds of USAAF aircraft were assembled after being shipped across the Atlantic into Avonmouth. Trucks and even wingless fuselages were towed down the Portway at night in the blackout, through Bristol and up to Filton, the drivers following a specially painted line on the road

Filton By-Pass. Construction of the dual carriageway stopped when war broke out and was abandoned altogether when it was decided to extend the runway across the By-Pass and through Charlton village to support the Brabazon project. The path of the By-pass across the airfield is just detectable

Officers' Mess of 501 Squadron R.Aux.A.F. Built c.1928. This became Barnwell Hall, the hall of residence for BAC's apprentices, after 501 and the other RAuxAF squadrons were disbanded in 1957

BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation - the nationalised airline) used the West Bay of the Brabazon Hangar for several years from late 1948 until facilities at Heathrow were built. Lockheed Constellation and Boeing Stratocruiser airliners were a common sight at Filton in those days.
