This line marks the original path of part of the Willington Waggonway (late 1700's). To the left (west) the George pit and off shot the William/ Billy Pit), to the right (east) the Craster and Bewick pits.

This diagonal line is part of the Willington Waggonway complex. Coal from the Bewick, Craster, George and Bigge Pits were once ferried to the Tyne at Willington Quay by horse pulled coal waggons (often called chauldrons) using this wooden waggonway.

There was a major disaster at Wallsend Colliery on the 18th June 1835 when an explosion led to the deaths of 102 men and boys, the youngest being just 8 years old. The dead were buried in this part of the churchyard of St Peter's Church.
