Entrance to the disused railway tunnel from Ramsgate Harbour Station (closed 1926). In 1936 a 2 foot narrow gauge line was opened to connect the old station with a new station at Hereson Road, 250 yards from Dumpton Park station (Southern Railways), this line ran almost entirely underground and closed following an accident in 1965. During WW2, the tunnel formed part of Ramsgate's deep air raid shelter tunnels which, in total, in total could accommodate 60,000 people although the town population was 33,000. Source: Wikipedia.

This railway started in 1936 as the "World Scenic Railway". This line was an electric railway with tram-style overhead pickup which ran through the old railway tunnel.

During 1938, R.D. Brimmell, the Borough Engineer, put forward plans for a network of tunnels incorporating the old railway tunnel, to provide deep level air raid shelters. These were opened on the 1st June 1939 and provided accommodation for up to 60,000 people. There were 22 entrances including the lower railway tunnel entrance and one in Arklow Square which may both be seen on the photo (although I don't know the precise position of the Arklow Square entrance).
