The coal trucks came into these sheds where the coal was emptied onto a Conveyor belt which transported it down to the ship where it was emptied. Men called Trimmers working in the ships hold made sure the coal was levelelled and equally spread out so the ship sailed level.

St Cuthbert's Vicarage deliberately built out in the countryside and well away from the smokey industrial riverside. In those days every house had a coal fire so much healthier for the Vicar to live away from it.

In the 40s and 50s this was the Pyrotenax football pitch. I went to St Aloysius and we didn't have a football pitch so sometimes used this one.

The Royal Hotel just inside the Hebburn border. It was nicknamed 'The White Lead' because of a white dust that settled on it & which came from the Lead Works across the road. In 2013 it is being renovated & will be given the old nickname of 'The White Lead'.

The Slag Heap. This heap on the Jarrow/Hebburn border was created from molten slag that came from Palmer's Iron Works in Jarrow. Slag from the Blast Furnaces was transported & dumped over many many years. It became a massive heap probably 100ft high. Me & my mates played on the Slag Heap throughout the 1950s. This photo taken in Monkton just south of it shows it in the distance.

Caledonian St. Lots of Hebburn streets had Scottish connections because of the number of Scottish people who came to the town looking for work & settling . My Dunn grandparents came down from Old Kilpatrick about 1913 & stayed.
