Coal depot, now demolished

The Pullens Estate, some of the last Victorian tenement buildings surviving in London. The housing blocks have communal open entrances and stairs and amenity space on the roofs. They have purpose-built yards and workshops to the rear of the dwellings. Pullen’s workshops were erected in mews type buildings at the rear of the tenement blocks, with doorways connecting the two. The estate also included a small number of shops, mostly located at the entrances to the yards. During the 1980s the buildings between Manor Place and the South side of Amelia Street were demolished by the council using their housing improvement powers. The demolition of the rest of the estate was prevented when squatters, intent on preserving the remainder of an individual late Victorian estate, occupied some of the blocks. 360 of the original 684 flats remain.

Manor Place Baths (Grade II listed). Victorian baths built by the vestry of Newington to improve public hygiene and health. The building later became the storage depot and offices for the Borough's Division of Public Works. It began to fall into disuse as public baths in the decades after the war as most apartments in the area began to have bathrooms installed. It was used by locals to do laundry up until the 1970s. The baths closed as a public facility in 1976 but continued as a boxing venue until a final show in 1978.

Browning Hall and congregational chapel. The Chapel opened in 1789 in what was then called York Street and it was where the poet Robert Browning was baptised in 1812. The street was subsequently renamed after him. The original Browning Hall, the chapel in Browning Street, was demolished in 1978 following extensive damage from a serious fire. All that remains is part of the burial ground.

Walworth Road conservation area

Herbert Morrison House used to be headquarters to the London Labour Party. Originally part of the Robert Browning Settlement which provided medical treatment, legal advice and social and educational activities for local poor children. In 1899 it became the centre for the National Committee for Organised Labour which campaigned for old age pensions. The present building opened in 1902 as the Browning Club and Tavern, an alternative to the local pubs as it sold coffee.

Tankard public house

The former Cuming Museum and Southwark Central Library at Nos. 153-155 (odd) Walworth Road. The library was built c.1892-1893 and the museum slightly later c. 1902-1906, by the architect Edward l’Anson. The buildings are also red brick with stone and terracotta dressings in a Dutch Renaissance Revival style. These were badly fire damaged in 2013 and are currently being restored.

Old Vestry/Town Hall (Grade II listed): No. 151 Walworth Road was built c.1864-65 by the architect Henry Jarvis as a Vestry Hall for the Parish of St. Mary, Newington. It is the second oldest surviving Vestry Hall in London. No. 151 Walworth Road is an eclectic mix of French Second Empire and High Victorian Gothic; the red brick building has white brick trim and stone dressings and a distinctive mansard roof, with fish scale slates to the pavilions. Around 1900 the building was extended along Wansey Street and remained the Town Hall for the Borough of Southwark until 1965. No. 151 Walworth Road housed the municipal offices for Southwark Council until it was badly fire damaged in 2013 and is currently being restored.

Nos. 140-142 and 150-152 Walworth Road (c.1793-4) were built by a local architect Hurlbatt. Originally the buildings formed a terrace of 12 houses, only 7 of which survive; the others were destroyed in WWII. The remaining houses were remodelled and altered in 1978 to form the then Labour Party Headquarters. These buildings are a legible reminder of the Georgian mansions which once lined the Walworth Road.

"The health of the people is the highest law". The Walworth Clinic was one of a series of pioneering health centres built at the end of the 1930s and was statutorily listed Grade II in 2010. On 25 September 1937 the Health Services Department of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark was opened on the corner of Larcom Street, adjacent to the library. The Walworth Clinic, brought all the borough’s health services under one roof for the first time. The building was designed by the borough engineer Percy Smart in the ‘Moderne’ style. A red brick building with artificial stone dressings in a jazzy Deco style, the statues of the mother and child on the roof indicate the clinic's association with family health.
