The building survives as an art gallery, brewery having closed in 2011. I remember the aroma of the brewery in 1970s and the lovely Tetley shire horses which we saw from time to time.

I've enjoyed many a glass of John Smith's Magnet ales over the years but I've never before stopped to look at the brewery itself in Tadcaster. This photo also includes the Samuel Smith's brewery just down the road and I've enjoyed quite a few of those too.

The building, bottom left is the Courage Brewery "Anchor Brewhouse". Brewing ceased there in 1981.

Just left of centre in this picture, behind the "Victoria Palace Theatre" is the Brewery that was run by Watney Combe Reid until 1959, this was the original "Stag Brewery". Watney pubs signage often referred to Watney's "Pimlico Ales".

Near Top left of this picture is the Hodgson's Kingston Brewery, on Brook Street, Kingston upon Thames. It was acquired by Courage & Co Ltd in 1943, and ceased Brewing in 1965. It's logo is still seen on many pubs around the S W London area.

Somewhere behind the smog sits the Golden Lion PH, which is still open today and features the original arch leading to the coach area and stables.

The Crown Pub still stands today.



Roneo works burned down in 1969. I watched the fire as a child from my bedroom window.

I've pinned the pub in Southwark, London, where I was raised in the 50's and 60's. It's been demolished since and the Financial Times building now sits on the site which is adjacent to Southwark Bridge (south). The pub was called the Windmill and it was tied to Courage's brewery which had a bottling/distribution plant very close by. Our customers were mostly dockers and men from the various industries close by; these included printers, foundry workers, and employees from Oxo. A poor neighbouring pub at the time was another Courage pub called The Anchor. It was always a very quiet pub until the the whole area was revitalised after the collapse of the docks, wharves and warehouses. The Anchor Tavern became and still is one of the coolest pubs in he area.

Hi I'm Blackburn from the Leeds area,I've only found this site today & have already pinned a couple of pubs from the area where I grew up, If you look in the Leeds area around Quarry hill flats you should find them. The Hope Inn one is interesting to me cos my grand parents lived in a yard right next door to the pub, Ive also noticed a brewery called Hammonds which was nearby but not pinned it yet

I took a photo of this pub near Bushey Park - I haven't found it from the air yet. The Duke's Head. boarded up.

Matthew Brown & Co. Ltd. was founded at Pole Street, Preston in 1830. It moved to the Lion Brewery on Coniston Road, Blackburn in 1927, following the acquisition of Nuttall & Co.



Matthew Brown was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries in 1987 and ceased brewing in 1991.

John Joule & Sons Ltd. was founded in 1780 and acquired by Bass Charrington in 1968. The brewery was closed down in 1972.

Castle Brewery, Bridge Road, Stockton-on-Tees. Opened in 1858 by WK. & J. Kirk and closed c1930 ,not demolished until 1969.

The Inn was located just outside the Burgh Boundary of the Town of Paisley, Renfrewshire. Pubs within the town had different hours from those outwith so it was common practise for folks to get the last Bus out of town to the Moss-side to take advantage of the later open hours.



The Pub was located on the perimeter of Royal Navy Airbase HMS Sanderling which became Glasgow Airport in the mid 60's. With the building of the M8 Motorway and the extension of the main runway of the airport the Pub was demolished and now lies under Junction 28A of the M8

Royal George Pub (formerly the Boars Head)

Occupying a Grade II listed building, this pub has been trading since the mid-19th century. It has always played a significant role in local life, and used to house spring ‘Mop Fairs’, events staged for the hiring of agricultural labourers and domestic staff. It was also a popular meeting place for local organisations, among which were the ‘Ancient Order of Foresters Lodge’, who, on a certain day each June, would arrive in town on horseback dressed as Robin Hood, and would stop at every pub before going to the church for a service.

In 2004, the Royal George hit local newspaper headlines in a controversy over the origin of its name – was the pub named after a ship, or after a monarch? Subsequent research revealed maritime connections, but a definitive answer has never been established.

Completely refurbished in recent years, the Royal George has been reinvented as a fusion between traditional pub and Mediterranean-style restaurant, a combination that continues its longstanding popularity with the town’s locals and visitors.

The Swan Inn

Dating back to the 1600s, this is one of the oldest buildings in Tockington.

Benskins Brewery in Watford High Street. The Brewery is long gone, but the office building still exists.

The Wrekin Brewery, Wellington.

There has been a brewery at Mortlake since the year dot. I remember it from the '60's when Watneys had it. I think it is now called the Stag Brewery and lager is brewed and or bottled there.

Pubs, and the breweries that supply them, have been a cornerstone of communities throughout England, Wales and Scotland. However, in recent years the number of establishments has fallen into decline, with many pubs closing every week.



The Britain from Above collection has thousands of images of cities, towns and villages showing everyday life for people in the 20th century. Users of the Britain from Above site have been fantastic at identifying key locations and features and sharing memories and now we have a slightly different challenge:



How many pubs and breweries can be identified within the Britain from Above collection? Many may not exist today and we’d like to try and find out which ones are captured in our photographs.
