The Boot public house, now a grade 1 listed building and has been a private house for many years. All along Castle Street there were a number of hotels and inns and in latter years "Temperance" inns. Berkhamsted had a lot of public houses being on a main road to London, the canal and it being a droving route for cattle into London's markets. '
