' Ruins of medieval monastery. The Saxon monastery where the Venerable Bede wrote many of his works lies partly under the nave of the present neighbouring church of St Paul's. The foundations can still be seen. However, the chancel of the present church dates back to 685AD and a dedication inscription is located above the chancel arch.In the south wall of the chancel there are two very small Saxon windows and one still has Saxon glass in it. This is a must-see attraction if you're in the north-east. The excellent Bede's World museum is not far from the church. '
