' This was once the site of the Maconochie Bros factory, a food processing company. From the latter part of the 19th century, they had a very lucrative government contract to supply the British army with tinned rations. They moved to this site in 1897. During WW1 they were responsible for the highly unpopular and ubiquitous Maconochie ration (or M&V - meat and vegetables). This was an inferior fat laden tinned stew that was issued to troops in the trenches and which very often had to be eaten cold from the tin, congealed fat and all. It was universally despised. On the positive side, it was Maconochie Bros who originally produced the very highly regarded Pan Yan Pickle. The company was bombed out during the blitz of 1940 and relocated to Derbyshire. '
