' Battle Tanks. During the 2nd World War the wagon works was used for munitions and built tanks. These were stored on the land behind Globe Lane School and those tanks returned after the war for decommissioning were also stored there. This land was raised as it had formally been used for spoil waste from Dewsnap and Astley pits but by the war it had been leveled off. During the 1950's tanks were delivered by rail to the wagon works where they were unloaded and driven down Globe Lane to be stored behind the school. The tanks were dangerous so guard rails were erected outside the school to stop the children from running out into the road. During classes there would often be explosions and large smoky fires when they were burning off the ammunition. The tanks were a good source of supply for radio ariels which made good fishing rods. Also the ammunition boxes were handy for keeping out toys in. '
